CARTHE drifters deployment within the ITINERIS EYES experiment in the Mediterranean Sea.
The dataset consists of CARTHE-type drifter trajectories at the sea surface in the Mediterranean Sea collected from July 2025 to January 2026 in the framework of the ITINERIS EYES experiment (Organelli et al., 2025).
CARTHE are devices freely drifting with currents, they span the first 60cm of the water column (Novelli et al., 2017), and they transmit their position with nominal rate of 10 minutes.

ITINERIS'EYES
ITINERIS' EYES (InTegrating, INnovating, Evolving Research InfraStructures for hEalthY and prEdicted marine ecosystemS) is an inter-disciplinary research cruise designed to tackle the health of Mediterranean planktonic ecosystems, and improve their predictability, through multi-platform experiments acquiring several Essential Variables (EVs). The approach of ITINERIS’ EYES is to leverage on the technological contribution of 11 European and Italian Research Infrastructures (RIs) operating in the marine, atmospheric and biodiversity domains in the framework of the PNRR ITINERIS - the Italian Integrated Environmental Research Infrastructures System. It is has been conducted on board of the R/V Gaia Blu of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) between July 8th-30th 2025 across the Western Mediterranean Sea. Sampling has been achieved in 27 sampling stations (from surface to bottom), along the ship-track at the sea surface, and through more than 80 autonomous platforms including lagrangian drifters, BioGeoChemical- and Deep- Argo profiling floats.

The oceanographic campaign SPIN-Gela 2024 was carried out on board the CNR (National Research Council of Italy) research vessel Gaia Blu between 7 and 14 September 2024 (Catania–Catania). Although initially scheduled from 6 to 17 September, the campaign was closed early due to adverse weather conditions.

SPIN-Gela_2025
"The SPIN-Gela 2025 campaign was conceived with the aim of continuing the geophysical exploration of the area investigated during the SPIN-Gela 2024 campaign conducted in September 2024, which, due to adverse weather conditions, had covered only about 25% of the target area. The upper boundary of the study area lies along the shelf edge off the southern coast of Sicily and extends seaward for approximately 30 km, covering a total area of about 2,000 km².
The study area lies in the Strait of Sicily within the western sector of the Gela Basin, specifically along its northern slope, at water depths between 200 and 1000 m. The area hosts hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation licenses, seismogenic sources, and submarine landslides. The area of multibeam echosounder and CHIRP sub-bottom profiler survey was planned to cover the shelf edge and upper slope, bridging the gap between previous CNR-ISMAR multibeam survey in the eastern sector of the Gela Basin and the Cassiopea–Argo production concessions and Panda exploration permits to the west. The new acquisition will enable the comparison of the geological evolution of the two sectors of the margin. The comparison focuses on active processes over the last tens of thousands of years, such as faulting and seafloor deformation, sediment transport driven by bottom currents, fluid seepage, and submarine landslides, which may have generated tsunami in the geological past. In addition to the few data acquired during the SPIN-Gela 2024 campaign, further datasets from bathymetric and 3D seismic surveys are now available, which allow for a thoughtful comparative analysis of the geological evolution of the two sectors of the basin.
The SPIN-Gela 2025 campaign took place within the framework of the SPIN Project (Testing of Best Practices for the Study of the Potential Interaction between Offshore Activities and Natural Hazards) which aims to test the best practices developed during the H Project (https://unmig.mase.gov.it/hazard-and-risk-assessment-lacinia-hra-lacinia-pubblicato-il-documento-di-buone-pratiche/). SPIN represents the third technical-scientific collaboration agreement between the Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMAR) of the CNR and the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) – Department of Energy, Directorate-General for Energy Sources and Mining Authorizations. The objective of this type of agreement is to enhance the environmental safety of offshore hydrocarbon exploration and production activities, following the EU Offshore Directive."

Safe Sea: Research Infrastructures for Ocean Observation and Safety
"The workshop “Safe Sea: Research Infrastructures for Ocean Observation and Safety” (Salerno,
23 June 2025) marked a key milestone in the implementation of the ITINERIS project (Italian
Integrated Environmental Research Infrastructures System) [1], funded under Italy’s National
Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
Organized by the National Research Council – Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR-ISMAR),
the event brought together researchers, institutional representatives, and local stakeholders to
discuss the role of marine observation technologies in ensuring maritime safety, environmental
protection, and the sustainable growth of the Blue Economy [2, 3].
A central focus was the presentation of two newly installed high-frequency (HF) radar systems
located in Battipaglia and Anacapri, developed within the ITINERIS marine component,
the Italian Integrated Ocean Observing System (IT-IOOS). These innovative instruments
measure surface currents in real time, supporting safe navigation, search and rescue operations,
pollution prevention, and coastal management.
The event also showcased the ITINERIS Marine Hub, a national digital platform that provides
access to marine data, services, and derived products according to the FAIR principles
(Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) [4]. The Hub serves as a single-entry point for
the scientific community, institutions, and maritime operators, fostering open data sharing
and interoperability across national and European systems.
Beyond its technological dimension, the workshop highlighted the value of collaboration between
research, institutions, and territorial stakeholders. Discussions emphasized the strategic
importance of the new infrastructures for maritime safety and environmental governance, and
their integration into international networks such as EuroGOOS, JERICO, and the ESFRI
Roadmap 2026.
Key outcomes included a commitment to extend radar coverage in the Gulf of Salerno through
the installation of a third antenna, to complement it with meteo-oceanographic stations and
coastal webcams, and to develop high-resolution forecasting models tailored to local needs.
The initiative attracted broad participation and media visibility, reinforcing public awareness
of marine research and its societal relevance. It demonstrated how national research infrastructures
like ITINERIS can act as strategic enablers of innovation, safety, and sustainability
in the marine and coastal domain, contributing to Italy’s leadership in ocean observation and
to the long-term development of the Blue Economy."
